Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism Aviation

This OFQUAL regulated qualification is designed to provide you with the specialist knowledge, skills and understanding relating to the Aviation and travel and tourism sector. It covers areas such as preparing for a career, Flight operations, Airport terminal operations, Leadership and human resources, customer service, travel agency operations and tour guiding, which can be applied to current or future employment in a variety of roles.

This qualification is designed for learners who want to go on to higher level studies or into a relevant travel and tourism role, particularly in aviation. It is suitable for use within a study programme.

This qualification is mapped against National Occupational Standards (NOS) in Travel and Tourism and Aviation. It would support progression into an Apprenticeship, employment or into higher level studies.

This qualification provides the basis for you to progress into employment within the travel and tourism sector and is supported by employers and experts from the travel and tourism industry such as Swissport, Hays Travel and Travel Counsellors.

Aims of the course

These are to:

  • Understand of flight operations, including decisions and planning procedures and the requirements for flight operations.
  • Create a contingency plan for a flight.
  • Understand the factors involved in influencing flight operations decisions, e.g. (A380 sustainability and environmental impact).
  • Understand airline communications and terminology and use these to calculate flight times across time zones.
  • Explain the range of travel and tourism organisations as well as their ownership and interrelationships.
  • Understand airline route ownership, e.g., airlines giving up routes due to reduction in fleet.
  • Gain an understanding of ground operations, including health and safety and ramp operations
  • Gain knowledge about inspections, including defects, breakdowns.
  • Understand airport terminal operations, including the passenger journey and how airports maximise the passenger flow.
  • Understand the principles of the travel and tourism industry and explore the various avenues of work within this industry.
  • Gain transferable skills that can be applied to the workplace or further study.
  • Analyse employment opportunities and the impact of current trends in travel and tourism.
  • Develop and understand the policies and procedures of the chosen travel and tourism organisation

Essential skills

While completing these qualifications, learners may develop the knowledge, understanding and essential skills employers look for in employees. These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent learning and problem-solving, to more tricky-to-measure skills such as:

  • an appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress
  • appropriate interpersonal skills
  • communicating with professional colleagues/peers and/or hierarchical seniors
  • supporting other aspiring employees
  • personal manners and department understanding

Structure

To be awarded the Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism: Aviation, learners are required to successfully complete 3 mandatory units and 9 optional units.

Mandatory units:

Unit 1 – The UK travel and tourism industry
Unit 2 – Customer service in travel and tourism
Unit 3 – Preparing for a career in travel and tourism

You’ll also choose 9 optional units to complete, depending on your personal interests or career aspirations. The optional units cover subjects such as:

Unit 4 – Hospitality in travel and tourism
Unit 5 – Marketing for travel and tourism
Unit 6 – Investigating airline cabin crew
Unit 7 – UK airports
Unit 8 – Worldwide passenger airlines
Unit 9 – Flight operations
Unit 10 – Airport ground operations
Unit 11 – Leadership and human resources
Unit 12 – Health, safety, and security in aviation

How the course is delivered

This Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism Aviation is delivered via blended learning. Learners also get full access to online Learning Environment (VLE) which provides access to case studies, learning materials and activities, presentations, and web links. Online tutor support and guidance is provided throughout the course, where learners can interact with the tutors, get feedback on their progress and submit their work electronically. Face to face interactions will be conducted through video sessions or within the classroom environment.

Entry requirements

These qualifications are designed for learners who want to go on to higher level studies or into a relevant travel and tourism role. Learners should have already achieved a Level 2 Travel and Tourism qualification, or equivalent, or have some experience/understanding of the subject area.

They’re particularly relevant for those aged 16-18 undertaking a large programme of full-time study, but are also relevant to adult learners who may be changing career or entering a new industry, and need a solid background in this area.

Certification

After successful completion learners will be awarded OFQUAL recognised qualification – NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism Aviation.

Typically, if you complete this qualification, you can progress on to a number of further learning opportunities, such as:

  • Degree in Air Transport and Operations
  • Private pilot licence (PPL)
  • Level 4 Tourism Management
  • Apprenticeship or Higher Apprenticeship in Travel and Tourism
