Level 1 Certificate in Travel and Tourism
This OFQUAL regulated qualification provides an insight into travel and tourism, allowing learners to develop knowledge and understanding of key concepts such as customer service, problem solving and careers in the industry. It is designed for those who would like to progress onto further study within the travel and tourism sector.
The qualification focuses on the development of skills and knowledge to support working in the travel and tourism industry. This qualification provides the knowledge and understanding to support progression to the next level of vocational learning.

This qualification is mapped against National Occupational Standards (NOS) in Travel and Tourism. After successful completion of this qualification, learners can gather evidence that may be used towards the knowledge requirements of a relevant competence-based qualification.
Aims of the course
These are to:
- provide learners with an understanding of the principles of the travel and tourism industry and allows them to explore the various avenues of work within this industry
- allow learners to gain transferrable skills that can be applied to further study or obtain employment.
- gain an understanding of the travel and tourism industry and to prepare learners to progress onto further study understand and develop the skills necessary to work within the travel and tourism industry.
- understanding work practices and how different roles and departments function within an organisation.
Essential skills
While completing this qualification, learners may develop the knowledge, understanding and essential skills employers look for in employees. These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent learning and problem solving, to more tricky- to- measure skills such as:
- an appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress
- appropriate interpersonal skills
- personal manners and deportment
- understanding work practices and how different roles and departments function within an organisation.
Structure
To be awarded the NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Travel and Tourism, learners are required to successfully complete 2 graded mandatory and 4 graded optional units.
Mandatory units:
- Unit 01: Customer services in travel and tourism
- Unit 02: Communication skills in travel and tourism
Optional Units could include:
- Unit 03: Travel and tourism facilities in the UK
- Unit 04: Hospitality in travel and tourism
- Unit 05: UK visitor attractions
- Unit 06: Transport for UK tourism
- Unit 07: Promotional material for travel and tourism
- Unit 08: Travel or holiday sales
- Unit 09: Working in travel and tourism
- Unit 10: Problem solving in travel and tourism
- Unit 11: Careers in travel and tourism
How the course is delivered
This Level 1 Certificate in Travel and Tourism is delivered via blended learning. Learners also get full access to online Learning Environment (VLE) which provides access to case studies, learning materials and activities, presentations, and web links. Online tutor support and guidance is provided throughout the course, where learners can interact with the tutors, get feedback on their progress and submit their work electronically. Face to face interactions will be conducted through video sessions or within the classroom environment.
