Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism
This OFQUAL regulated qualification is designed to provide you with the specialist knowledge, skills and understanding relating to the travel and tourism sector, over a 2-year course. It covers areas such as preparing for a career, customer service, travel agency operations and tour guiding, which can be applied to current or future employment in a variety of roles.
This qualification would allow you to study other qualifications, such as a foreign language or geography, which would provide a complementary mix for this subject. The qualification provides you with the basis to progress into employment within the travel and tourism sector. It would also support progression into an Apprenticeship or into higher level studies.

This qualification provides the basis for you to progress into employment within the travel and tourism sector and is supported by employers and experts from the travel and tourism industry such as Swissport, Hays Travel and Travel Counsellors.
Aims of the course
These are to:
- provide learners with an in-depth understanding of the principles of the travel and tourism industry
- evaluate customer service provided by travel and tourism organisations as well as making recommendations for improvements.
- analyse employment opportunities and the impact of current trends in travel and tourism
- plan for and take part in an interview, evaluate their performance, and produce an action plan.
- audit your own skills, qualifications, experience and interests for applying for employment, higher level studies, apprenticeship, etc
- describe the appeal of travel and tourism destinations to different types of travellers within the UK, Europe and worldwide.
- organising an event and undertake a market research activity
- create a hospitality package to meet the needs of the customer
- explain the policies and procedures of the chosen travel and tourism organisation
- understand the procedures, information sources and legislation used by travel agents
- understand the influences of marketing activities and the marketing mix and develop a marketing campaign
- understand factors affecting the UK passenger transport industry
- investigate career opportunities for resort representatives and working as a resort representative.
Essential skills
While completing these qualifications, learners may develop the knowledge, understanding and essential skills employers look for in employees. These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent learning and problem-solving, to more tricky-to-measure skills such as:
- an appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress
- appropriate interpersonal skills
- communicating with professional colleagues/peers and/or hierarchical seniors
- supporting other aspiring employees
- personal manners and department understanding
Structure
To be awarded the Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism, learners are required to successfully complete 3 mandatory units and 9 optional units.

How the course is delivered
This Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism is delivered via blended learning. Learners also get full access to online Learning Environment (VLE) which provides access to case studies, learning materials and activities, presentations, and web links. Online tutor support and guidance is provided throughout the course, where learners can interact with the tutors, get feedback on their progress and submit their work electronically. Face to face interactions will be conducted through video sessions or within the classroom environment.
